Course details
A maximum of 16 people are admitted to the Yoga Teacher Training Course.
You must get the personal attention you need to develop to your fullest potential. So, our course numbers are capped at 16. If you are on a course with 20+ other people, your needs can get lost in the crowd. We will ensure this doesn’t happen.
Based in evidence
You will learn from established medical facts, recent research, or some of Yoga’s most revered ancient practice manuals. You’ll emerge familiar with the esoteric principles of Yoga and explicit knowledge of how these ideas become real in our bodies and minds through practice.
Breadth of learning
You’ll develop new language skills to communicate your knowledge safely, appropriately and engagingly. You’ll learn how to plan and build Yoga practice sequences and when to include guided breath exercises or meditations.
Your support network starts here
There’s a support network in place for you. The teacher training group is the sangha – your Yoga practice and development community. Throughout the course – and for years afterwards in many cases – you’ll find yourself supporting and being supported by your Sangha friends.

CURRICULUM
You will have time to feel and experience Yoga postures from within deeply. There are some essential instructions for each pose, but the best teaching comes from a deep body awareness – good teachers tell you what they’re feeling physically, not just what shape to make. This is authentic and connects with people: as the often-used saying goes: You are your best teacher. It turns out that you are your own best student as well.
Human anatomy and physiology
We discuss some of the latest ideas emerging from the sciences of anatomy and therapy. What is Yoga doing to bodies and minds? Knowing this means you can design relevant and robust sequences for your classes and personal development. There’s additional strain on the teacher, too – we’ll discuss ways to care for ourselves as teachers.
Subtle anatomy
Yoga teaches about an energy body of prana woven into our physical body. What does this mean? How can we work with it in our practice and design classes? And what are the implications for practice and for designing classes? These energy ideas have shaped much of our practice: teachers need to understand them.
Yoga philosophy, lifestyle and ethics
Okay, so we understand that there is a subtle energy body. But how does this relate to the fundamental principles of Yoga? We look at the history of Yoga and how it’s evolved through the ages. We better understand what we do today and why we do it. This is a foundation on which to base lifestyle choices.
Practicalities of teaching and holding classes
What does it mean to be self-employed, what are your insurance and data protection obligations, and what are the marketing basics you need to know? And for those interested, where would you start if you want to open a studio?
Teaching practice
You’ll practice teaching most weekends on the course. This starts with teaching to the rest of the group for just a few minutes and sharing feedback for everyone else. Gradually, you’ll take on more and more. You’ll teach public classes to friends and family and report on your experience during your ongoing assignments. At the end of the course, you’ll undertake a teaching assessment.
Several speakers visit us to support your work. You will have multiple sessions with research scientists, doctors, and Sanskrit scholars.
PICTURE GALLERY – 200 HOURS
Movement practice
Half of your course time is spent in practice of one kind or another – and most of this will be movement practice. This means physically practising and perfecting a broad range of asana – postures you’d see in classes aimed at mixed groups (which is the most usual teaching situation). We’ll also analyse postures in terms of:
- Safely entering, holding and exiting.
- Anatomical breakdown: key muscles, critical alignments.
- Possible adjustments and facilitations – assessing the most suitable for different people.
- Modifications and the use of props to support practice.
Most importantly, you will have time to feel and experience Yoga postures from within deeply. There are some essential instructions for each pose, but the best teaching comes from a deep body awareness – good teachers tell you what they’re feeling physically, not just what shape to make. This is authentic and connects with people: as the often-used saying goes: You are your best teacher. It turns out that you are your own best student as well.
Practical Details
Learning resources
You’ll receive your copy of the Yog Dhrishyam Teacher Training Manual to keep. We will often base group discussions on sections from the manual.
There are some other books you’ll need to read. Some – like The Hatha Yoga Pradipika and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras – are old works from Yoga’s history and are just as relevant to today’s practitioners as when they were written. Some are much more recent and shed new light on Yoga’s ancient methods. They will enrich your knowledge of Yoga and its philosophy and application. We’ll send you details of the required books; many are available as e-books, making them cheaper.
You’ll be taught by experts from many disciplines related to Yoga and learn a great deal from your course leader.
Attendance
You’re expected to attend every scheduled course event and presentation. One is offsite, where the whole group is on the excursion. During the course, people can experience dramatic changes in other areas that can affect attendance at the last minute. See the Daily Schedule below for more information on how we can support you.
Assignments and assessment
Your final assessment comprises a written exam, a teaching assessment, and your coursework. Your coursework during the course includes your practice diary and some group and individual assignments. You must submit all your coursework on time to pass the course. Your teaching in your assessment class must be safe. Your written exam reflects your knowledge as a teacher.
